Our Environmental Stewardship

Here at Poet Botanicals, our approach is grounded in a deep respect for nature and a commitment to thoughtful, sustainable creation. In this, we are inspired by the principle of kaitiakitanga - a commitment to care for and protect the environment for future generations.

We believe that what we take from the earth should be honoured through intention, and restraint - formulating in small batches using high-quality botanical ingredients chosen for both their efficacy and integrity.

Guided by a quiet sense of environmental stewardship, we consider each step of our process - from sourcing and formulation to packaging and production - with the aim of minimising our impact.

We always prioritise natural materials, responsible suppliers, and low-waste practices, using recyclable and reusable packaging to extend the life of every component beyond its first use.

Ethically harvested magnesium

Coconut wax ~ we use only coconut wax for our candles. Coconut wax is a sustainable product in that coconut trees are high-yield (they grow fast). Our coconut wax contains no artificial ingredients - no paraffins or additives.

Lead-free wicks ~ we only use cotton braided wicks that are lead-free. Our candles burn all the way to the bottom of the vessel (if our guidelines are followed) meaning no left over wick.

Therapeutic grade essential oils ~ we only use pure therapeutic-grade essential oils from reputable New Zealand suppliers.  We will never use fragrance oils or cosmetic essential oils which are not pure and not dervied from natural sources.

Ethically harvested magnesium flakes ~ our topical magnesium oil contains magnesium flakes that have been farmed and ethically harvested in collaboration with the local farmers in the area. They use solar energy for minimal impact on the environment and to ensure the magnesium is of exceptional purity.

Organic where possible ~ if an essential oil, witch hazel or essential oil is available in organic form, we will use it in our products. We always use organic jojoba oil in our therapeutic rollers and organic witch hazel in our natural aroma mists.

PACKAGING

We packaging has always been intentionally minimal. We don't use additional boxes for our products. We use recyclable boxes and biodegradable packing and packing tape to send our orders.

CANDLE REFILLERY

In an effort to ensure candle vessels are used more than once, we offer a candle refill service from our Wellington studio. Our candle refill service encourages customers to re-use the vessel (we also accept other brand vessels) and it's an opportunity for new customers to discover the beauty of natural essential oil candles versus a fragranced candle. NEXT STEPS

We continue to refine our processes as we learn of new and better ways to do things. Our priority will aways be to respect nature and all the magic it gifts us.

In the next 12 months we plan to work with Terracycle to dispose of the plastic tops and inserts from the essential oil bottles we receive.  We currently wash all of our amber bottles (if not re-using) to ensure they can be recycled.
