What makes a candle truly natural?

At Poet Botanicals, we believe a truly natural candle begins with thoughtful choices at every stage - from the wax and wick to the ingredients that create its scent. Our candles are handcrafted using clean-burning coconut wax, a renewable plant-based wax chosen for its smooth, slow burn and beautiful scent diffusion. 

Rather than synthetic fragrance oils, we use pure essential oils derived from botanicals, capturing the aromatic essence of plants to create nuanced, nature-inspired scent experiences. Paired with lead-free cotton wicks and mindful packaging choices, each candle is designed to honour the natural world while transforming everyday moments into meaningful rituals.

For us, a natural candle is not simply about what is left out—it is about what is intentionally included: quality ingredients, botanical integrity, and a deeper connection to nature.

Essential oils vs fragrance oils

At Poet Botanicals, we believe scent is more than a fragrance - it's an invitation to connect with nature, create atmosphere, and support moments of wellbeing. This is why we choose therapeutic-grade essential oils over synthetic fragrance oils in our candles and botanical blends.

Essential oils are naturally derived from plants, capturing the aromatic essence of flowers, leaves, fruits, roots, and resins. Each oil carries a unique botanical character, creating nuanced, layered scents that reflect the beauty and complexity of the natural world. Beyond their beautiful aromas, many essential oils have traditionally been valued for their aromatic and emotional benefits, helping to create rituals of calm, focus, grounding, and renewal.

Many conventional fragrance oils are created using synthetic aromatic compounds designed to produce strong, consistent scents. While they can offer an extensive range of fragrance profiles, they do not carry the same connection to the living plant.

Why we choose coconut wax

After experimenting with many waxes, we choose coconut wax for its exceptional quality, sustainability, and beautiful burning experience. Derived from coconuts, a renewable natural resource (coconut trees grow fast!), coconut wax creates a clean, slow, and even burn with excellent scent diffusion. Coconut wax allows our carefully crafted essential oil blends to unfold gently over time. Unlike many conventional paraffin waxes, which are petroleum-derived, coconut wax offers a more considered alternative for conscious candle makers. Its smooth, creamy texture and natural characteristics reflect our commitment to creating candles that are kinder to you, your home and the environment.

Lead-free cotton wicks

Every element of our candles is chosen with intention including the wick. We use lead-free cotton wicks because they provide a clean, reliable burn and are made from natural fibres. They're designed to burn evenly, allowing our carefully blended essential oil scents to be released beautifully throughout your space. By choosing wicks free from lead and other unnecessary additives, we honour our commitment to creating considered, thoughtfully crafted candles that support a more mindful ritual from the first light to the final burn.

We are a very small family business located on the South Coast of Wellington. Our products are hand-made in small batches and we pride ourselves on our ethical production and attention to every detail.
