There’s something quietly powerful about creating a scent that feels like a place.
Recently I had the opportunity to collaborate with Kate from O-Studio, a beautifully considered wellness space in Wellington dedicated to restoration and ritual. With its sauna, ice baths, massage, yoga, breathwork and meditation, O-Studio offers a rare kind of pause - a place where people can step out of the noise of daily life and reconnect with themselves.
Together, we set out to design a bespoke essential oil blend that could hold the essence of that experience.
The intention was simple but meaningful: to capture the feeling of being immersed in nature - the quiet, grounding atmosphere of the New Zealand bush - and translate it into scent.
The blend opens with bright, clarifying lemon, a note that lifts the senses and invites a deep breath. Beneath it, the crisp evergreen character of New Zealand Douglas fir and black spruce brings the unmistakable aroma of native forest — cool air, resin, and green needles underfoot. Cedarwood atlas anchors the composition, adding warmth and depth, like the steady presence of tree trunks and earth.
Together, the oils create something that feels expansive yet calming. Clean, woody, and alive - reminiscent of walking through a forest after rain, when the air feels sharp and restorative.
Scent has a remarkable ability to shift the nervous system. A single inhale can slow the breath, soften the shoulders, and gently bring us back into the body.
More than anything, we wanted the blend to feel like stepping outside.
Like fresh air filling the lungs.
Like the quiet clarity that comes from being among trees.
A small sensory reminder that nature is never very far away.
