Magnesium - in particular magnesium oil is being hailed as a kind of miracle cure for poor sleep and sore muscles - but how does it work and how effective is it really?

What is magnesium?

Magnesium is an important essential trace mineral, required for many of our body's processes, including muscle and nerve function, the control of blood glucose, regulation of blood pressure and brain development. Essential trace minerals can’t be produced by the body and must be found in food and/or supplementation. When we become deficient in magnesium we can suffer from muscle cramping or spasming, irritability and low mood, sugar cravings and it can effect our sleep. Modern diet - particularly high sugar and starches and stress drastically the amount of magnesium in our bodies,.

How can magnesium support a good night’s sleep?

Research shows that magnesium blocks N-methyl-D-aspartate (a receptor in your body that can hinder your sleep) and stimulates gamma-aminobutyric acid (a receptor that can promote good sleep).  Magnesium oil on your feet could also help with certain sleep disturbances, such as nocturnal leg cramps and restless legs syndrome.

What are the advantages of applying magnesium topically?

Applying magnesium directly onto the skin is known as transdermal absorption and begins to absorb immediately. Oral supplementation does not have at the same immediate affect and can cause digestive issues for some. When our body is not at optimal health supplements are not always  assimilated by the body., minimising their effect.  Topical application means sore muscles and tired joints can be relieved quickly by applying the spray directly onto those problematic areas.

What is in magnesium oil - is it actually an oil?

Magnesium oil is a mix of magnesium chloride flakes and water - it’s not actually an oil but is called such because once the flakes and water are combined they take on a slightly oiler consistency.

We use only the most bioavailable form of magnesium—magnesium chloride which is mixed with pure distilled water.  We source our magnesium chloride from a New Zealand supplier and it’s harvested from the Tibetan Plateau and processed using traditional solar methods.  We use pure distilled PH neutral water which is free of fluoride or chlorine and sourced from within New Zealand.

FAQs

How much magnesium should I use per day?

We recommend three to four sprays on an area, twice a day. Oral supplementation of magnesium has risks as large doses can have a laxative effect. Toxic symptoms from excess magnesium are rare because the body naturally gets rid of any magnesium it doesn’t need.

Should I stop taking my magnesium supplement?

We recommend one or the other so its a good idea to stop taking any magnesium supplementation whilst using the topical oil.  This will allow you to determine its effectiveness too.  Before using the oil please consult your health care provider if you have a chronic medical condition including diabetes, hypertension, heart disease. Please also consult your healthcare provider if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.

Where on my body should I spray magnesium?

We recommend starting on the soles of your feet initially - you may experience some tingling when you first start to use the oil.  If you’d like to use the magnesium to support muscle recovery or joint pain you can spray directly onto these areas. Definitely avoid spraying onto broken skin (it stings), near the eyes or sensitive areas of the body (arm pits, genitalia etc). Our magnesium oil absorbs easily but you can rub it in.
